Scrabulary Word of the Day #899 04/29/25 "BATEY"

 BATEY = BABE + MATEY

Today's word is courtesy of a dear friend and former co-worker. 😊

In searching Goggle.com, the definition of the word "batey" can reference a settlement, often a shanty town, located near a sugar mill. A community where sugarcane workers and their families live, often temporary or makeshift housing. A second definition refers to the Taino culture where a "batey" was a sacred plaza or rectangular area surrounded by stones with carved symbols (petroglyphs) where ceremonies and other social activities took place. However, in the language of Scrabulary, this word was uttered by my friend, inadvertently combining two words "babe" plus "matey".  She told me that she usually says "cheers matey" or "love you babe" depending whether she is addressing a friend or loved one. She was addressing a family member and said:

"Cheers, batey!"

Cheers, all!👋

~Scrabulary Chris 😊

A Scrabulary word is comprised of two words inadvertently spoken as one in everyday conversation.
